The R Prize: Richmond’s Challenge to Become the Most AI-Literate City in the World

When electricity first illuminated our world, its transformative power unfolded over generations—decades passed before it fundamentally altered how we lived and worked. The internet, though faster in its adoption, has taken thirty years to reshape our society, and many aspects of life remain remarkably similar to the pre-digital era. Artificial intelligence shatters this pattern.
For nearly two years, I’ve been at the forefront of Richmond’s evolving conversation about artificial intelligence, watching as this technology transforms at an astonishing pace—not over decades or years, but months, weeks, even days. The rules of technological evolution we’ve known for centuries no longer apply.
This unprecedented acceleration is why I’m proposing the R Prize—a bold challenge to unite Richmond in becoming the most AI-literate and innovative city in the world, not through gradual adaptation, but through immediate, purposeful transformation that positions us at the vanguard of the most significant technological revolution humanity has ever experienced.
### Beyond Efficiency: The True Promise of AI
Artificial intelligence is redefining how we live, work, and solve problems. While much of the global dialogue centers around efficiency and productivity gains, I believe the real opportunity lies in AI’s power to foster innovation and human-centered problem-solving. Unlike social media, which ultimately fragmented communities, AI has the potential to bring us together. It can bridge gaps, fuel creative thinking, and unlock new pathways for progress.
Richmond is ready for this. I’ve seen it in the questions people ask, in the ideas they share, and in the courage they’ve shown to step into a rapidly evolving landscape. The R Prize is our chance to accelerate this momentum, to lead by example, and to prepare our city for the future that’s already knocking on our door.
### The R Prize: A Catalyst for Transformation
The R Prize is Richmond’s invitation to shape the future, to harness AI not as an abstract concept but as a tool for real-world impact. But this isn’t about a technology challenge. It’s about using technology as a tool to solve real problems—no matter how analog the final solution may be. The focus is on how people collaborate with one another and technology to drive innovation and meaningful progress. It’s about celebrating the creative process where human ingenuity and AI intersect to create solutions that matter.
I propose [AI Ready RVA](https://aireadyrva.com/) facilitate this challenge, ensuring it is accessible and designed to encourage diverse participation. The intent is to create an experience that fosters collaboration and brings together different perspectives to address real-world problems, leveraging the momentum of the burgeoning nonprofit.
### Architecting Our AI-Powered Future
**Kickoff Event**: We will gather as a community to share ideas, discuss the problems AI can help solve, and envision new possibilities. This will be an open invitation for anyone interested in shaping Richmond’s future.
**Recruitment and Team Formation**: To encourage collaboration, we’ll host an expo-style event where individuals can share concepts and recruit team members. This gathering will help foster multidisciplinary teams, ensuring a diversity of skills and ideas.
**Development Phase**: Teams will work independently to develop AI-powered solutions. Each team will be required to demonstrate how their collective strengths and diverse perspectives contributed to their innovation. The goal is to showcase the power of collaboration and the value of different viewpoints in solving complex problems.
**Interim Check-Ins**: Along the way, teams will have opportunities for feedback and engagement, helping them stay on course and fostering a sense of community throughout the process.
**Presentation Day**: I anticipate many teams will participate—more than can be accommodated on stage for presentations. Judges will review early submissions and select the most promising solutions for the final pitch. This ensures a high-quality showcase of the strongest ideas.
**Awards**: The prize pool will be significant, with a minimum top award of $100,000—a sum designed to turn ideas into action and innovations into viable businesses.
### Collective Intelligence: The Power of Community
The R Prize is rooted in the idea that collaboration leads to stronger, more sustainable solutions. By bringing together diverse skills and perspectives, we can better tackle the complexities of real-world problems. This challenge is designed to encourage input and engagement at every stage, creating a space where teamwork isn’t just valued but essential. The goal is simple: to create an environment where working together with technology leads to thoughtful, practical, powerful solutions.
### The Imperative of Now
AI is advancing quickly, and Richmond needs to keep pace. Acting early allows us to shape how this technology benefits our community. The R Prize is an opportunity to encourage innovation and problem-solving that will position Richmond to adapt thoughtfully and proactively to the changes ahead.
The R Prize is still at the idea phase, but with strong interest from AI Ready RVA membership and the broader community, it has the potential to move quickly. If there’s an appetite for this challenge, it could become a cornerstone initiative to advance Richmond’s leadership in AI literacy and innovation.
### Forging Tomorrow: A Call to Action
To the leaders, creators, innovators, and dreamers of Richmond: the moment is now. We need sponsors, partners, and participants who are ready to shape the future. We need ideas, collaboration, and courage.
But most critically, we’ll need corporations, legacy builders, and platform partners to contribute early support. The ability to move quickly will shape the challenge’s potential impact. Companies that invest now will help lay the foundation for an initiative that will create meaningful opportunities for Richmond. Those who participate will be acknowledged for their role in making this effort possible.
Join me. Be part of this movement. Help make Richmond the most AI-literate, innovative city in the world.
The time is now. The challenge is set. The R Prize is ours to win. Let’s show the world what Richmond can do. Think we can do it? [Indicate your support.](https://aireadyrva.com/support-the-r-prize/)
