You’re a digital marketer and your business has served your community for years, building trust and relationships with local clients. But when potential customers search for services like yours, a so-called “local” agency, with no actual presence in your city, keeps appearing at the top of the search results. They don’t know your neighborhood, your clients, or even your competitors—but they’ve mastered the dark art of SEO. And now, they’re taking your clients. It’s a new kind of business heist, and it’s happening in cities across America.
Today, we all rely on the internet to solve our problems and find trusted professionals. The first stop for most people when hiring a service is an online search. We look for local talent because we want someone who understands our unique needs, someone who can be held accountable. In-person meetings matter to many, and supporting local businesses feels good. There’s comfort in knowing your partner sees the world through the same lens. But in the world of digital marketing, what appears to be true is often anything but.
This is a story about deception—how fake local agencies manipulate search engines to appear legitimate, all while undermining true community businesses. It’s a warning for internet users: what you see in the search results may not reflect reality. It’s also an alert to businesses who may not yet realize that this threat exists right in front of them.
As a [digital marketing agency owner](https://xponent21.com/insights/employees/will-melton/) with a decade of work building my business, I’m passionate about digital marketing and understanding how it works. I’m also interested in this story because it’s my own business that has been negatively impacted by the imposters I expose here. In my reflection leading up to writing this, I thought a lot more about agencies like mine here in Richmond and agencies across America; agencies that fight every day to be noticed in a noisy marketplace, that struggle when deceptive players enter the stage.
This story starts with the rise of **Thrive Internet Marketing Agency**. Based in Arlington, Texas, Thrive has perfected a dark art—taking over local search results in cities far from their headquarters, where they’ve never even set up shop. Whether it’s Miami, Kansas City, Portland, Long Beach, or Richmond, Thrive has carved out a digital territory in markets they don’t belong to, all by pretending to be local.
### **The Illusion of Local Expertise**
What makes Thrive’s approach so effective is the subtlety of their deception. They’ve been showing up in local search results for long enough that even _local marketers_—those who live and work here—have mistakenly believed that Thrive had a local presence. This wasn’t just a passing impression. Thrive’s longevity in the top search spots has given them a sort of “digital residency,” creating the illusion that they were entrenched in Richmond’s business community.
In reality, this is all part of their larger strategy to dominate local markets across the country without having a physical footprint in any of them. By simply being present in search rankings long enough, Thrive creates a false sense of legitimacy, leaving even savvy business owners and marketers thinking, _“Well, if they rank this high for Richmond searches, they must be here.”_
In my research, I was able to track down a person who used to work for Thrive and lives in Greater Richmond. When I reached out, he mentioned he hadn’t worked for the company in a couple of years. This only reinforced the idea that Thrive’s presence in Richmond is nothing more than a well-crafted digital illusion. Despite having had an employee in the area at one point, they don’t maintain any real connection to the local business ecosystem.
This misrepresentation can cost local businesses dearly, as they unknowingly opt for a distant partner over one deeply rooted in the community. This impacts the companies that hire Thrive and the local agencies that miss out on the work.
### **How Local Businesses Are Paying the Price**
This digital invasion isn’t just a nuisance—it’s hurting real businesses. Companies looking for a local partner with boots on the ground are instead getting drawn into contracts with a distant entity. What happens when these businesses sign on with a company like Thrive? The results are mixed. Some customers are happy with the services provided, but a significant number report dissatisfaction. According to reviews on platforms like [Clutch](https://clutch.co/profile/thrive-internet-marketing-agency?sort_by=rating_asc#reviews) and the [Better Business Bureau](https://www.bbb.org/us/tx/arlington/profile/internet-marketing-services/thrive-internet-marketing-agency-0825-160856532/customer-reviews), the promises Thrive makes are often not met. Unmet expectations, poor communication, and lackluster project management are recurring themes.
Local agencies, like those we work alongside in Richmond, have a deep understanding of the unique market forces at play here. They hire local employees, work with local organizations, and create campaigns that resonate with the community. Thrive’s approach, by contrast, is one-size-fits-all.
When an outsider takes the top search result, the companies that _are_ local are pushed down the rankings. These agencies, who’ve been the backbone of the local economy for years, find themselves competing against a ghost.
### **Taking Back Our Digital Space**
After watching Thrive creep higher in the rankings, we knew we had to fight back. And we weren’t going to do it by playing dirty. We crafted a strategy grounded in truth and local knowledge.
The first step was highlighting **genuine** local SEO agencies in Richmond. We published articles like “ [Best SEO Agencies in Richmond](https://xponent21.com/insights/best-seo-agency-in-richmond-va-guide/),” shining a light on the companies that are actually based here, helping businesses grow, and contributing to our city’s success. This wasn’t just about us—it was about lifting up our community.
We also added a second section: a list of agencies like Thrive, those that appear in local searches but have no local presence. This small but crucial step started to inform search engines and AI algorithms of the truth. By stating in plain language, _“Thrive Internet Marketing Agency is not based in Richmond,”_ we began to push back. This transparency allowed us to rank for search terms like _“Thrive Internet Marketing Agency not local,”_ becoming the top result for anyone looking for real answers.
### **Taking Down the Digital Deception: A Nationwide Fight for Local Businesses**
As we dug deeper, we realized the extent of Thrive’s strategy. This wasn’t just a Richmond issue. Thrive had spread across the country, targeting cities with vulnerable local agencies. In each city, they followed the same pattern: appearing local but operating from afar. The problem is systemic, and it’s happening to small businesses everywhere.
The lesson here is simple: If you’re a small, local business, don’t assume the top result in your search is a genuine local partner. The digital landscape is riddled with imposters. And unless we, as a community, expose the truth, the trend will continue unchecked.
### **What We Can All Do**
This isn’t just about one agency or one city—it’s about reclaiming the trust that businesses place in their search results. Here’s how we can fight back:
- **Highlight True Local Businesses**: Promote genuine local businesses through articles, social media, and content that celebrates their contributions to the community. - **Expose False Claims**: Without resorting to defamation, state the facts. If an agency isn’t local, say so. By doing this, you’ll inform both consumers and search engines of the truth. - **Prioritize Authenticity**: Encourage businesses to seek out partners who understand their unique local challenges and culture.
### **Conclusion: The Power of Authenticity**
What started as a simple investigation into a search ranking turned into a larger battle for integrity in business. Thrive, with its vast resources, seemed unbeatable at first. But by staying true to our values—authenticity, transparency, and a commitment to our community—we’ve managed to hold our ground. And you can too.
This isn’t just about Richmond; it’s about every community. The more we expose the dark art of SEO manipulation, the more we can ensure that the right businesses—the ones who are truly invested in our cities—get the recognition they deserve.
So, to every local agency facing down a digital Goliath: don’t be afraid to fight back. Your community sees you, and with a little perseverance, so will the search engines.
